I haven't been motivated to really write on this blog for awhile. Lately, it's just been a picture or two. It's not that I don't have things to say, it's just that I don't really get time for SL except at night, and by that time, I'm pretty much brain dead.
I'm on Spring Break right now, so I have a little free time on my hands. I didn't get to have a real vacation this year - it's a "staycation" instead.
So, here I am with my 7 things about me, because, you know, it is all about me.
1. I originally joined SL back in 2009 because it was all the buzz in education. Everyone was talking about how SL was going to revolutionize distance learning. I was in all the SL sessions at the ed conferences and was so excited at the time, but the education side seems to have kind of died. My college is sitting on a sim that gets almost no use at all. The education side hasn't completely died off, but it didn't seem to live up to the hype (although I was at a conference yesterday and one of the presenters was extolling it's virtues). I just wish SL would have embraced the education community more (instead of dissing it by doing things like ending the education discount on land).
2. Back in my noob days,
The Mermaid Diaries blog saved me! I really appreciated the work that Natalia Zelmanov did creating very basic tutorials and chronicling her SL journey. From there, I learned that some SL people blog their way through the virtual landscape, and that's when I created this blog. Natalia hasn't been active in SL in some years. Maybe she'll come back.
3. I used to love hunting in SL. The
Twisted Hunt in Spring 2009 was my first hunt. I had just been in SL for about a month, and it allowed me to explore in a way that I couldn't have done on my own. I found some of my still favorite shops back then, like Sn@tch. Ah...I remember it was just a tiny shop connected to Retox, and I thought, OMG! Here's someone in SL who has the same style as I do! I was in love. And I'll never forget the DAYS I spent at Tyranny Designs trying to find the damn little rotating box (it was hidden in a bunny butt). I'll never forgive Tyr for that.
4. I am probably the biggest loner there is in SL. I tinker and I shop, then I retreat back to my skybox. Sometimes, if someone talks to me, I run or teleport away. I'm as shy in SL as I am in RL, although I can't transport in RL. Sometimes, I do this:
That doesn't mean that I don't wish I had friends. I really do. I would love to have someone say, "Hey! Let's go shopping/exploring/scare people with our strangeness," but I understand that my shyness is a huge hurdle for other people to overcome, and at first, that person will probably have to make an effort to hunt me down and force me out of my cocoon.
5. I can never decide what I want to do with my slife. Sometimes, I like to make things, sometimes I like to blog things. Both are very time consuming activities. I really can't (and shouldn't) do both because I really don't have the time to do both. It kind of ends up being a half-assed effort no matter what I'm doing, and it's driven by my own indecision.
6. When I do blog, I really try to show my appreciation for some of the lesser known creators. For awhile, I was a member of a few blogger groups, I received review copies of things, and while I appreciated it very much, it was hard to blog something that 100 other people had already blogged. I would often sift through to find the things that had not been blogged or had been overlooked by the other bloggers or that I could put a unique spin on. When I had to take a break from SL last year, and I left all the blogger groups and asked to be taken off all blogger lists. I didn't want to be receiving review copies that I knew I wouldn't have time to blog. Now that I am back, I feel like a burden has been lifted and I'm free to explore. I don't have 50 new things in my inventory to review each week, and it's kind of nice. Blogging can get like a job with obligations and expectations, and to me, that takes the fun out of it. There are a small handful of shops and designers that I am truly enamored with, that I love everything they make (and they know who they are because I stalk them), and that blogging their things is amazingly awesome. But, for the most part, I prefer to buy what I blog, mostly because
I think designers should get paid for their hard work.
7. I have never dated anyone in SL, I have never been partnered with anyone, and I wouldn't even know where/how to go about meeting someone in SL for dating. It seems I suffer from the same problems in SL as in RL because in RL, I'm forever alone, and I'm OK with that. How, pray tell, is a shy girl supposed to get up the nerve to meet strangers? It doesn't matter, though, because between blogging, and tinkering, and RL work, when would I have the time?
